Buffalo Soldier marches to victory
Apprentice Andrew Poon was the star of the Arima Race Club’s (ARC) Second Day of racing for the 2018 season when he rode a career best four winners on the eight-race card. Poon rode a great race on 4/1 shot Buffalo Soldier which rolled back the year to score by 1/2 a length from stable mate Set Sail in a 1-2 finish for trainer Harold Chadee and owner Dave Chadee.
The Glenn Mendez trained Rock In Peace which was having his second start in T&T was made the 2-1 favourite to register his first win and he went down guns blazing in a photo-finish with Chadee’s pair.
Trainer Shaffique Khan had a good hand in yesterday’s feature event with his pair of Holy Man and Princess Suri well supported in the market at 5/2 and 3-1 respectively.
From the off in the feature over 1,300 metres, Root of Jesse led narrowly from Rock in Peace with Set Sail in attendance. These were followed by Princess Suri, Holy Man, Buffalo Soldier and Desert Dancer with Eye See You contented to observe from the back.
At the far turn, the pace continued to be a torrid one with very few changes but with 500 metres left the complexion of the race changed as Holy Man white blinkers appear on the outside of the field with Wilmer Galviz, he joined Set Sail, Rock In Peace and Root of Jesse which was coming under pressure.
At the top of the straight there were four horses across the track with Rock In Peace holding a narrow lead over Set Sail and Holy Man as Root Of Jesse began to hoist the white flag. It was here that Andrew Poon asked the Harold Chadee owned nine-year-old dark-bay gelding to go win his race and he quickened to join the leaders as Desert Dancer came a charge down the outside.
Inside the final 50 metres Buffalo Soldier held a 1/2 length advantage which he never relinquished from stablemate Set Sail. Rock In Peace was a head further back in third with Desert Dancer further back in fourth.
Buffalo Soldier recorded the time of one minute, 19.32 seconds for the trip.
Poon the ARC Day Two hero also rode Ten Melodies, Poppy Love and Sunset Cloud to victory as he won half the races on card.
No trainer saddled two winners on the card.
