‘Angel’s’ on the way to ‘Glory’

To Wafij is capable of springing a surprise by beating strongly-fancied hot favourite, Sound And Silence, in the group two Cornwallis Stakes over five furlongs of ‘good’ Newmarket ground this afternoon, when a two-day ‘juvenile classic’ fixture gets under way.

Always a fitting climax to any season, with the group one ‘Dewhurst’ set to be staged tomorrow on ground that promises to be magnificent, just like those pitches which those lucky Premier League footballers grace every week, carpets. A bit different to muddy, ridged, fields which we knew!

Thankfully no watering has taken place for months and punters can therefore sally forth confidently in knowledge the Rowley Mile course is the definitive ‘level playing field!’

My idea of the best racetrack on earth, hopefully To Wafij can put behind him an inexplicable last time out lapse and prove Roger right about his judgement of this superbly-bred colt with an easy-flowing action.

On the time-handicap To Wafij is the only serious danger, others will be fighting for that vital group placing with owners hoping, fervently, the unexpected will happen.

Competition in the ‘Sport Of Kings’, especially at this level, has always represented ultimate satisfaction in my elongated career and I’m salivating at the prospects for this particular ‘Autumn Festival!’

Varian also saddles clasic hope, Angel’s Glory, for a Maiden Fillies’ Stakes over seven furlongs, what beats her will win!

Angel’s Glory achieved a useful mark first-up at Haydock recently; expectations are high for improvement ‘in the town’ and so don’t oppose without good reason, even though well-regarded Veracious, a beaten favourite on debut, represents Sir Michael Stoute!

Running in tandem will be ‘good to soft’ York where Harogate obviously has Militia to beat in an intriguing Novice Stakes over an extended five furlongs, and vica versa; James Bethell against Richard ‘winning machine’ Fahey.

James remains convinced progressive Harrogate is ‘special’ and with three places on offer I’ll take the obvious route with this nap selection and back him each-way. We’re out to make this column pay!
