Another ‘Star’ for Big John?’

Wednesday, October 11, 2017

Wafeer is expected to recoup recent losses and continue a consistent run for Richard Hannon in a twelve-runner Novice Stakes over six furlongs of ‘good to soft’ Nottingham today, this is always a stable to follow during the ‘back-end’ period.

In the golden olden days one backed some tremendous-priced nursery winners from Hannon’s Marlborough yard, when the training license was held by Richard Hannon senior; the classic-winning veteran is still prowling his long-time establishment, little has changed apart from ‘junior’ effecting a seamless transition. He’s grown up rapidly with responsibility and comes across well when interviewed after winners. That means we see a lot of Richard on our screens!

Success breeds success and placing is so important; thrice-raced Wafeer has been found an excellent slot and ‘best-in’ on my time-handicap, judged on a ‘career-best’ mark over the minimum trip at Sandown last month.

Obviously Simon Crisford-trained Alwasmiya is reckoned a potential rival; this Kyllachy filly, which gets a 5lbs allowance, was backed into favouritism on debut at Newcastle three weeks ago when a three lengths fourth to Godolphin-owned Peace Trail on tapeta.

Money talks and the pre-race confidence is indeed noted.

Knighted can also be expected to improve on a tidy first-up effort and there are four newcomers which could be anything but if Wafeer hits his latest form Dane O’Neill is likely to steer a course into the winners’ enclosure.

Once-raced Sevenna Star represents John ‘Enable’ Gosden in the ten-runner Maiden Stakes over a mile, look no further for the winner!

Later Kempton stages anothereight-race evening programme which includes an attempt by Glendevon to go one better in a Novice Stakes over seven furlongs. What beats him will win!

Glendevon was withdrawn a few days ago by Richard Hughes who has booked Jamie Spencer, again; we don’t know why he was scratched.

Moqarrar constitutes a danger but is drawn twelve; Sir Michael Stoute may well withdraw him, using the ‘self-certificate’ system* because you can’t beat the draw, especially at this venue.
