BASSETERRE, St Kitts, Aug 19—

Sent in at Warner Park, the Tridents mustered a competitive 168 for six off their 20 overs, with Pollard top-scoring with an unbeaten 63 off 40 balls.

Opener Dwayne Smith chipped in with 33, Pakistani Shoaib Malik got 29 while Nicholas Pooran scored 20.

Leg-spinner Samuel Badree picked up two for 27 to lead Patriots.

In reply, the hosts had reached 84 for one when rain arrived at the half-way stage of the innings to end play prematurely, 17 runs ahead of the par score.

Captain Chris Gayle was unbeaten on 38 while Mohammed Hafeez ended 30 not out.

The victory was the fourth in fifth outings for Patriots and it left them second on eight points while Tridents slipped to their third defeat and lie fourth on four points.

Tridents were off to a stuttering start, losing New Zealander Kane Williamson (7) and Chris Barnwell (1) cheaply to be 34 for two in the fourth over.

Smith threatened briefly, belting five fours and two sixes in a 16-ball cameo before picking out mid-off with Badree in sixth over to leave Tridents on 50 for three.

Akeal Hosein (3) and Shoaib, who struck a four and a six off 30 balls, followed in quick succession as the visitors slumped to 89 for five in the 13th.

Not for the first time this season, Pollard came to his side’s rescue, pummeling a four and half dozen sixes to up the momentum.

Crucially, he put on 57 for the sixth wicket with left-hander Pooran who slammed a pair of sixes in 14-ball knock.

Tridents then struck early when they bowled, prising out the dangerous Evin Lewis for seven in the first over, miscuing a stroke to third man off left-arm spinner Hosein with the score on 14.However, Gayle and Hafeez then came together in a potential match-winning stand as they added 70 in an unbroken second wicket partnership.

The left-handed Gayle clubbed four fours and two sixes off 25 balls while Hafeez faced 29 deliveries and struck four boundaries.

With both players set, the match was nicely poised for an interesting finish when the elements intervened. (CMC)
