Tough night forT&T footballers in MLS
It was an unforgettable Wednesday night for T&T players as their clubs in US Major League Soccer closed the night’s programme with winless records.
In fact none of the T&T players attached to the clubs were involved on the night for their respective teams.
At Toyota Park, Bridgeview, Illinois, Chicago, national defender Mekeil Williams was suspended for his Colorado Rapids’ 3-0 loss at Chicago Fire, while utility player Joevin Jones was also suspended for defending champions Seattle Sounders 3-0 defeat at the hands of Sporting Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park, Kansas City, Kansas.
Staying in the West, Real Salt Lake got the better of New York City 2-1 at Ru\io Tinto Stadium, Sandy, Utah with T&T defender 20-year-old Shannon Gomez not among the travelling team’s match roster.
The best result came for winger Cordell Cato’s San Jose Earthquakes which battled to a 1-1 draw with Orlando City at its Avaya Stadium, San Jose, California with the T&T international on the bench.
As it stands, Toronto FC, beaten in last season’s MLS final, sits atop the Eastern Conference with 25 points from 12 matches, five ahead of Orlando City which has a match in hand while Columbus Crew (19) and Chicago Fire (18) are third and fourth respectively.
New York City is fifth with 17, just ahead of New York Red Bulls (16) which occupies the last playoff spot followed by Philadelphia and New England, both with 13 and then Atlanta United, the club of T&T captain Kenwyne Jones, with 12, just one ahead of DC United while Montreal Impact is in the cellar-spot with ten point from as many matches.
In the Eastern Conference, Sporting Kansas leads with 22 points, followed by Houston Dynamo and Dallas FC, both with 19, Portland Timbers (18), San Jose Earthquakes (16), Vancouver Whitecaps (13), LA Galaxy, Minnesota United and Real Salt Lake, all with 11, and Sounders (ten), and Colorado Rapids, last with seven. Tomorrow night, some of the T&T players will be back in action prior to their departure for national team duties in the Concacaf Final Round World Cup Russia 2018 qualifiers away on June 8 and 13 against USA and Costa Rica respectively
Utility player, Joevin Jones is expected to return from suspension when Seattle Sounders host Real Salt Lake; national captain and striker Kenwyne Jones and Atlanta United are also at home to Houston Dynamo; Philadelphia Union welcomes T&T defender Mikeil Williams and Colorado Rapids while Cordell Cato and his San Jose Earthquakes travel to Dallas FC.
On Sunday, Molino and Minnesota United welcomes LA Galaxy while Shannon Gomez’s New York City FC head to Orlando City.
In the United Soccer League (USL), Atualla Guerra was substituted in the 90th minute of his Charleston Battery’s 1-0 win over Saint Louis at MUSC Health Stadium, South Carolina to lead the Eastern Conference with 19 points from eight matches, two more than Tampa Bay Rowdies. Neveal Hackshaw was an unused substitute for Charleston.
Defender Julius James was on the losing end in Sacramento Republic’s 2-0 loss at Real Monarchs with Trevin Caesar being replaced in the 46th minute while Aikim Andrews featured for 56th minutes in Toronto FC II’s 1-0 defeat at Bethlehem Steel
Still in the USA in the North American Soccer League, striker Jonathan Glenn was not used off the bench while midfielder Kevan George was not included on the roster in Jacksonville Armada 2-1 win over Miami United at Ted Hendricks Stadium, Florida in the US Open Cup Second Round.
Jacksonville is currently fifth on the league table with ten points from seven matches, four adrift of leaders.
With some of those players expected to be in the T&T World Cup qualifying squad Soca Warriors coach Dennis Lawrence, a former national World Cup defender will kick off his training camp for the two upcoming World Cup qualifiers in Colorado beginning on Tuesday May 23rd ahead of this country’s clash with USA on June 8 and five days later at San Jose, Costa Rica.
The T&T squad will train at Prentup Field in Colorado and during the camp, will play up to two closed-door training matches.
Yesterday, Lawrence conducted his first training sessions with some of the home-based players who are part of a provisional selection with the overseas players joining the camp by June 4.
