UTC banks Jean Pierre Challenge title
Goal-shooter Dionne James and goal-attack Ayanna Peters were fierce in the circle for Unit Trust Corporation (UTC) to help earn their team the Jean Pierre Challenge trophy after a convincing 28-20 win over powerhouse Police in the Courts All Sectors Netball League.
UTC dominated much of the proceedings on Monday night at the Centre of Excellence in Macoya, despite a late charge from the police officers in second stanza of the 20-minute-a-half contest in a knockout competition for teams in Championship Division.
James, who netted a match-high 17 goals from 23 attempts, and Peters (11/17) worked well together and manoeuvred efficiently under heavy pressure from Police goal-keeper Kaysha Duncan and goal-defence Nina Jordan, giving UTC a narrow lead at the half 14-12.
Doing the work in the Police shooting circle were Donessa Wickham and Jeselle Navarro against some tough defence from UTC's goal-keeper Avi-Ann Archie and goal-defence Mawiyah Strong.
In the second half, UTC upped its game and with the combination of Krystle Gay, Shurnel De Verteuil and Jyde Montoute functioning in the centre-court, was having its way taking an eight point (22-14) lead with some seven minutes to go.
However, some unforced errors by the UTC shooters saw the momentum of the game shift in favour of Police, who by then had installed Gurshier Grant in as goal-shooter and the six-footer helped bring her team within five (25-20).
UTC though refocused and thanks to its shooters hitting some vital goals, managed to pull away again and take the win by eight goals.
Earlier, spectators were treated to action in the Retro Division with Police led again by Donna Charles with 38 in 45 tries beating Harlem, 48-25 in the opening match.
In the second affair of the evening, Debra Alie connected 24 goals in 34 attempts to put TSTT past Bermudez, 30-20.
Tomorrow (Thursday), matches continue with teams in the Premiership and Retro Divisions battling for the knockout titles in their respective categories.
