San Fernando Police are investigating the death of Dennis Mungroo who reportedly fell and broke his neck after he left the Accident and Emergency Department of the San Fernando General Hospital, without being treated. Hospital officials completed a file on the incident yesterday and it was sent to senior officials of the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA). According to reports, Mungroo, 57, of Couva, went to the hospital around 1.10 pm last Sunday. It is alleged he was intoxicated. Hospital officials said he was inside the waiting area to see a doctor but left through a back entrance.
It is believed he went to the southern side of the building where there is a steep drop. Witnesses said Mungroo tripped and rolled onto the driveway. Hospital staff reportedly rushed to his aid and took him to a resuscitation room. He was examined by Dr Bhagwandeen who pronounced him dead. Hospital officials denied reports Mungroo died after waiting for several hours to get treatment. A team of officers from the San Fernando CID, led by Cpl Ali, visited the scene and an autopsy is expected to be done on the body today.
