Thursday, June 23, 2011

Tobago Police have detained a 26-year-old suspect in connection with the murder of Gasparillo bar owner  Rasheek “Pone” Khan, 73.The suspect, of Diego Martin, was arrested Sunday evening in Tobago, at a house which police said he had been using as a hideout. He was brought back to Trinidad by boat on Monday and handed over to Southern Division Homicide detectives investigating Khan’s murder.

A second suspect is being sought in connection with the murder. Khan, 73, of Bonne Aventure Road, Gasparillo, was shot and killed during a robbery at his bar, Funseekers, on February 22. Police reports state Khan, 73, was in the process of closing up the bar for the night around 9.10 pm when he was accosted by the men. The two robbers, police said, had spent most of the afternoon drinking beers at the popular liming spot, located a short distance from the Gasparillo flyover.

Khan had reportedly told the men he was going to lock up. As he went to dispose of garbage, one of the robbers followed him into the kitchen and placed a gun to his head. The second robber raced up the flight of stairs to the family’s home where he accosted Khan’s wife, Dolly. The robber struck her with a gunbutt and demanded cash and jewelry.  A gunshot was heard downstairs. The second robber ran down the stairs and Dolly followed. She found her husband dead on the floor.
