Patrice Millien is a 27-year-old who wears several hats in a company she founded four years ago. Branded as A Millien Concepts, Millien is the company creative director, producer, project manager and creator of the exciting Uncovered Series.

Defining Uncovered Series, Millien said: “It is an innovative initiative we designed to showcase and promote local creative talent across the creative/entertainment spectrum.”

Millien completed her studies at UWI, St Augustine four years ago, majoring in Psychology and, with not much to do decided to venture into the administrative side of the creative world. She explained: “My brother, David, a music producer (Millbeatz Entertainment) had his music studio with many projects ongoing. I noticed he was struggling with the project management side of the operation so I offered to help him. It was then I realised that there were other creators who also needed help as far as structuring their ideas and projects were concerned.”

Millien proceeded to reach out to some of her friends who were involved in the creative field of music, film, photography and graphic design. “I reached out to them, offering to assist,” said Millien. “It was in the midst of helping David with his numerous soca projects that I got the idea of doing acoustic versions to his soca songs.

“At the time he was using many undiscovered artistes doing background vocals and I found that they possessed a lot of talent. I decided to combine the two, getting these underground artistes to perform the acoustic covers of popular soca selections.”

Millien continued: “The concept was new and fresh and this drew the attention of several people from across the board to what we were doing, especially as it involved new talent that few had heard off before. The demographic was wide as people of all ages were drawn to A Millien Concepts and our production quality. We then began a web series on You Tube and every year we added a new branch.”

After its inception, A Millien Concepts held a radio-singing competition, followed by live events to highlight the performers, a live Christmas special which was held at Beveca (now known as Rush Lounge in Tacarigua), and a 30-minute television show on C TV.

Encouraged by all the success she has been having, Millien is busy as the proverbial bee formulating new features for her company.

She said: “This year we are doing the fourth season of the web series and an Open Mic live series. Aside from the Uncovered Series we intend developing the production side of the business in a comprehensive manner. For instance, we are working more on creative productions with external entities, as well as a opening booking branch, to hire the singers for events.”

Millien’s client listing is filled with young, talented, emerging artistes and she is looking for more. She said: “One of the progressive, emerging talents we have unearthed is Aaron Ifill who has already being the Discover Me Artiste of the Month in June, at Fiesta Plaza, MovieTowne.

“We have also featured talented artistes like Nailah Blackman, Christian Kalpee, Keone Osbourne and Denice Millien. They have had some of the most popular videos that were produced for the Uncovered Series.”

Millien explained that covering or reworking the works of other artistes is a complicated and tricky business, especially when it comes to the issues and intricacies of copyright.

“We usually reach out to the original composer and artiste to let them know that we have selected their work, to get their approval. Generally speaking most of the artistes whose works we cover are supportive and cooperative, as well as appreciative of what we produce.

“For instance, the first video we did for the first episode was of Flipo doing Doh Tell Meh Dat. It was done by Denice Millien and when Flipo saw it he even volunteered to put a voice track on the video. Recently, Voice put on his vocals on the video Nailah did of Cheers to Life.”

Moving forward, Millien intends to focus on live show productions in relationship to the web series.

“We plan to produce ten live this year,” she disclosed. “Because Uncovered was initially intended to be a fun, interactive product that would showcase the ability of A Millien Concepts to produce that type of high-quality production, I want to bring everything back home so that the business part of what we are doing could expand. The objective is to make us attractive to other entities who might be interested in contracting us to do productions for them.”
