Designers shine at Miss La Reine Rive

Designers excelled last Saturday afternoon when the finals of the 2011 Miss La Reine Rive Pageant were held at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain. Although the gown Gambage Xavier Gambage, worn by Miss Point Fortin RC Invaders’ Xavier Baptiste, copped the Best Design award it was no cakewalk for designer Dexter Jennings as many of his rivals excelled in their designs. The pageant was staged by the Ministry of Community Development, under the aegis of Minister Nizam Baksh, and marked the culmination of this year’s Prime Minister’s Best Village Trophy Competition. In stark contrast to when this event was in its heyday, there was poor public support for the pageant and the Folk Fair, held simultaneously at the same venue.

However, the audience, which occupied about one-third of the covered QPS Grand Stand, remained lively throughout the programme, giving each delegate loud applause as they appeared on stage introduced by media personalities Sharon Pitt and John Victor. For Gambage Xavier Gambage, loosely translated as “I come out to show off, I nice, I pretty,” Jennings accessorised the floor-length gown, made from dyed crocus bags, with coconut, bamboo and wooden beads. Xavier also took home the award for Best Make-up, done by Bernadette Jennings.

Other designers to impress included Cleavas Charles, Roney John, Ian Smith, Kurt Mouticeux and July Davis, Terry David, Delia Alleyne, Jessie and Daniel George. Not everyone in attendance agreed with the judges’ decisions on final night when the judges were only adjudicating on gowns, hairstyles and make-up. Points accumulated by the contestants previously, in the categories of Self-Expression and Talent, were added to Saturday’s scores so some of the delegates who shone then apparently didn’t in earlier judged categories.
