Morning Routine

Being a self proclaimed “morning person” is something I really strived on. Having a structure for every day and making sure that nothing would get in my way. Up by 5AM, prepare all my meals for the day, have a cup of coffee and I'm out of the house by 6 to get to work. After a while of feeling accomplished and like I had a really good routine going, I began having to force myself to get out of bed and I felt more tired than I did accomplished for starting my day on such a good note.

I had convinced myself that this robotic routine was setting me up for success when in reality; it was stifling me. Even if I got to bed late, or had a rough night's sleep, I made it a priority to get out of bed at the same time every single day- this turned me into a zombie. My seemingly “healthy” routine, eventually sucked the energy out of me, forcing me to ignore my intuition and live in a way that was not healthy at all.

As someone who basically lives and breathes health and fitness, I surround myself with all the right advice; “Eat intuitively,” “Listen to your body,” and the famous, “fall in love with the process, results will come.” I'm constantly preaching about the importance of living a holistically healthy lifestyle; exercise, eat healthy, live life the way you'd like to! Then why was it so difficult to give up my routine and just live intuitively?

Well, living intuitively is the most challenging thing. If you live without any type of structure at all your life can basically go into a downward spiral of disorganization. So use your discretion before giving up all structure in your life completely. Now, when you allow yourself to make decisions based on how you feel, this new sense of self-awareness can transcend into all other areas of your life.

My morning routine now consists of one major component- giving myself enough time to prepare myself for the day before leaving the house. In my more structured routine, I was grabbing the quickest breakfast that I could, not worrying about the nutritional content just so I can get out of the house in time. My working hours are more or less 9-5, but being an early bird I decided getting in for 6 30AM was the best option. Now that I've decided to axe the morning routine, I was up at a reasonable hour, make a good breakfast, ensure that I have lunch and healthy snacks and then go on my way for the day.

Another huge change, was not rushing to consume by breakfast. I longed for the weekends when I could sit on the couch with my breakfast, a cup of coffee and my favourite Netflix series and just having a relaxing, not rushed start to my day. And then one morning I thought to myself, “why not feel this way every day?” When I made the decision to ensure that I sit to have my breakfast at home every day, I found myself being more alert, more creative at work and just happier throughout the day. My workouts even improved because I no longer felt like I was completely drained at the end of a day.

I f you're also a creature of morning habit, I challenge you to live mindfully and intuitively for one week. Make new habits that make your soul happy and be aware of the changes you see.
