Getting started

Once in every man and/or woman's life they realize that there's more to being a couch potato after or even before work. Instead of sleeping late or just going home after work the adrenaline kicks in from excitement and you decide to go to the gym. The motivated individual gears up and goes to the gym to purchase a gym membership. Many people go, buy the membership then go home all motivated to go to the gym the following day. The next day arrives and you're all geared up. Then, something happens. You realize “wait, what am I supposed to do?”

Have you ever been in this situation? I know I have. After getting my bearings and becoming motivated to make exercise a part of my daily routine, I figured it out. The motivation doesn't come from buying all the best gym clothes so that you can, “look the part” or having all the necessary accessories that you have no idea how to even use. The motivation comes from you. YES YOU! Making up your mind that it doesn't matter if you think you look ridiculous, at least you started. Many people have never even had the guts you have to sign up, or go back to actually start the following day. You've made a big step and that's something to be proud of.

Now, let's talk about what you do when you get there. Intimidating right? Yeah I know. You see those guys or gals walking around in the branded jerseys? Usually with the gym's name on it, they're there to help you. They are trainers hired by the gym to assist new comers with getting their bearings on the gym floor so that maybe one day you will be able to do this fitness thing on your own. In my own experience, here's what works. I started going to the gym at 14 years old. My first trainer was a floor trainer at the gym. His creative and challenging workouts made me fall in love with fitness. Every single day I'd look forward to a new challenge. This sparked something in me. I got more and more motivated to try new things!

Then, I started doing classes. These are your best friends. With classes you get a wide variety of different types of fitness and guess what, you choose what you like. Let's say you do circuit class but realize you like boxing more, all well and good! Everyday that boxing is available you make that your workout time. Sounds simple enough right? But, many people just can't find the motivation and are constantly discouraged. Ever had a long day and thought, “I had a long day, gym can wait until tomorrow.” Or you wake up early and opt for that extra hour of sleep as opposed to just getting up and starting to MOVE! Let's examine some of the health benefits of exercise:

1. It makes you happy

Anyone remember that famous line, “Exercise releases endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't kill their husbands.” Well it's true! Exercise has been proven to have a positive impact on persons living with depression and anxiety. Exercise increases the production of endorphins, this has been proven to help the perception of positive feelings and reduce a person's perception of pain. Exercise also stimulates changes in the brain that regulate stress and anxiety, helping to boost self-esteem and build confidence all at the same time!

2. Helps with weight loss

Now, this is probably the leading cause of many people turning to exercise for help. There comes a point where maybe you're just not happy with the way you look. Even though sometimes all it takes is really learning to just love yourself for who you are, exercise not only help shed those extra pounds but the happiness you may feel can help you build the confidence you've been lacking to just love who you are.

3. Increases your energy levels

Exercise can be a super energy booster for those healthy and those suffering from any ailments alike. Starting your day with a good workout, gives off this boost of energy that sets you up for the entire day. You wake up, workout and feel like you're ready to take over the world in one day! Imagine feeling like that EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. I personally would feel like some kind of super hero. Now here's for my people that like to end the day with a workout. Same thing applies, you wake up ready to take on the world and let's say your day doesn't quite go as planned, long meetings, unproductive projects or just a plain old annoying day. Leaving the work place to smash out a good workout can turn your day right around. You get it done and head home to get a good night's sleep and get ready to conquer the world all over again.

4. It's good for your muscles and bones

Growing up every time your parents spoke about strong bones and teeth they were more than likely referring to drinking milk. What about strong bones and muscles? What helps that combo maintain strength and grow. For most children, going into the yard or street to play once your homework was done was the best feeling ever! So why does that change as we get older? Physical activity stimulates muscle growth and aids in strengthening out bones. If you're trying to really get that extra bit of muscle mass and strength weight training is definitely for you. But if you're into more high intensity or low impact exercise, them you're looking for a leaner look but what many don't know is that these types of exercises promote a higher bone density making our bones stronger.

5. It can reduce your risk of chronic disease

The leading cause of chronic disease in today's society is… shocker! A lack of exercise! Didn't see that coming. Regular exercise has proven to increase insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular fitness and body composition, while decreasing blood fat levels as well as blood pressure! The #1 recommendation to reduce belly fat and avoid long and short-term chronic diseases is, EXERCISE!
