Why an invitation to visit China?
The only thing that could be achieved by the Prime Minister’s visit to China and will be beneficial to the Chinese economy is an enticement to borrow more money at a long-term payback rate, which, in the long run, will leave the nation with an obligation to the Chinese. As regards to giving assistance or advice on our agriculture, well we really don’t need any of this.
We have here at present, especially among our Indian population, an army of farmers and agriculture workers loaded with expertise in agriculture who just can’t wait to commence work in this field, which would benefit and assist in the diversification and cease our reliance on oil and gas. However, since the Government seems to be hesitating in starting any of these rewarding projects things in this field remains at a standstill.
The only other scheme involving the Chinese which will be only of interest to the PNM and will be under their control will be to allow brigades of Chinese workers to come here to take over our potential agriculture projects at a cost to the nation.
This, however, is already in the hands of members of our Indian communities who are eager to proceed. This will no doubt be acclaimed by the PNM as a progressive move towards diversification despite the fact that many of our citizens could find themselves unemployed. What else could there be behind the PM’s visit to China? Ah ha, could it be the building of that bridge between Tobago and Trinidad?
