Tobago should take charge of own tourism effort

Tuesday, November 21, 2017

I, for one, am not surprised that the interest of the Sandals Group in Tobago has been somewhat downgraded for, let us face it, any impartial observer with no special interest, reflecting on the issues being raised in the negative (many petty) must conclude that there has been some element of underlying objection based solely on Sandals gaining a foothold in Tobago.

Needless to say, while Tobago needs Sandals, Sandals does not need Tobago. Indeed, one would have expected that there would have been a warm and encouraging welcome for the Caribbean entrepreneur.

Unfortunately, this does not appear to have been the case.

Speculation has been that the aftermath of the recent hurricanes has weighed heavily in the supposed downgrade by Sandals of its interest in Tobago, however, even though this could have played a part in the downgrade, it should be noted that on the whole, most of the Caribbean locations being served by Sandals had been spared of substantial damage.

This development leads one to suggest that the “splitting” of this country’s tourism effort has not been as complete as needs be and that the THA should be made to assume full control of tourism in Tobago, particular given the historical lukewarm disposition of Trinidad to Tourism.
